From Hel with Love by Blue Remy + giveaway

Hel hath no fury like her Raven scorned…

Fallen Valkyrie Legionnaire, Raven Aquilus, has always known she was an outcast to her kind. Stuck in New Orleans as the Protectress of the Nine Gates of Yggdrasil, she lives as close to the edge as her family will allow. One fateful night would change it all – Someone ritualistically slaughtered a guardian in one of her Gates, leaving Raven lying in a pool of blood. Ordered to find the killer before she dies along with her precious guardians, Raven is placed in a race against time, being forced to enlist in the help of a Human FBI paranormal agent. Together they must stop the serial murders before an ancient war reignites – and Raven loses everything, including a new found love, all to a jealous half-breed …

Welcome the XIII Hour™ series. Betrayal, Lust, Love, Murder, Jealousy and Revenge. The faery-tales that your mother never told you about just came true.

Fallen Valkyries, vampires, were-critters, gnomes, spider faeries ::shudder::, cocky ass humans.... really what more could a para-loving girl ask for? Okay, in this case maybe a wee bit more sexy bits, but really that's about it. Remy threw together a fantastic take on mythology, ballsy characters, mystery and betrayal, some make you squeamy action and a bit of  romance and created an incredibly entertaining world that I wasn't ready to leave by the last page.

There was such an easy feel to From Hel with Love which is what really pulled me in right from the start. While I was reading it I kept thinking how it flowed in a way that made me feel like I do when I'm talking with an old friend. It's comfortable, fun, easy and just, well, flows.

So the characters. Whew. I loved Raven. She's a bad ass chick and pretty much in charge of all of the other characters. She can kick ass, put the fear of Hel in you, making grown men quake in their boots and yet she has a zombie teddy bear she keeps tucked away and lets a little spider faery claim her even though she's terrified of spiders  I just loved that mixture of characteristics.

And Duncan. Lordy that is one cocky human.  He never does quite what she wants, calls her on things and puts his foot down on others. An alpha male...he is. The two really suited each other and the interactions between them were just what I look for in a couple. There's chemistry, snark, affection, humor. I would have liked more sexy bits and a little more detail to those sexy bits but that's really my only complaint for the two and just my personal reading preference.

"I can take care of myself."

"Didn't say you couldn't. I just said that you're not going alone."

"You're an ass."

"Deal with it." He tossed an offhanded shrug toward her, as Raven seethed at him.

"Screw you, Duncan."

"Name the time and place, sweet cheeks."

"You couldn't handle me." Raven suppressed a smile, surprised at the lightheartedness she was feeling.

"I'd just lay back and enjoy the ride, darling."

Raven blushed. There were no other words for it. He seemed to have that effect on her and she wasn't too sure how she felt about that.
Overall I really had a great time with this. It was a fun world to explore, the main characters and all of the side characters, Raven's minions, were awesome and I loved that kinda wacky pieced together family feel to them. There was a surprise or two along the way as they dealt with a slew of paranormal murders and a nice bit of romance starting up. A really fine combination and a great way to start off a series in my opinion. Definitely one I recommend to paranormal fans out there and an author I'll be keeping an eye on in the future.
