The Monthly Herd: August Recap!

Whew yall I can't believe August is already over! It was quite the month and dang I hardly remembered the beginning of it until going through posts for this. lol

I turned a year older this month *flails*, went to the AAD signing and got to meet some of the awesome blogger ladies from my state and visit with some fab authors, started on a super secret event that I'll hopefully be able to tell yall about soon (eep it's killing me not sharing!) and will soon have an authors services page up. Probably next week on that. The blog went through some tweaks and nudges and should all be working again for those on IE.

Tasty Delights/Cookbook Review--Meatless All Day by Dina Cheney--ALT Sandwiches w/ Frisco

Meatless food

Move over bland, wimpy tofu and lackluster salads—Meatless All Day redefines meat-free meals as colorful and super-satisfying. Whether you’re a committed vegetarian or are trying to cut down on meat, the hearty, creative recipes in Meatless All Day will inspire you to cook in new ways. Here, you’ll discover Beet Wellington, Spaghetti with White Bean Balls, Quinoa-Polenta Cakes with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce and White Bean Puree, Roasted Root Vegetable and Goat Cheese Salad with Lemon-Tahini Vinaigrette, and Baklava Sticky Buns—fare that will make avowed carnivores jealous. One secret behind these dishes: high-impact ingredients (like miso, tomato paste, and mushrooms).

To ensure that readers' dishes come out perfectly, the book opens with key cooking techniques, such as Tips for Perfect Vegetables, The Art of Cooking Eggs, and Tips for a Golden Brown, Crispy Exterior. It then lists 45 "power ingredients" that lend vegetarian food a meaty flavor, meaty texture, or both. The heart of the book is 85 ultra-flavorful recipes, with meal suggestions and ideas for making non-vegan fare vegan.

Type: Cookbook--Vegetarian
Rating: 4 out of 5
Difficulty: easy to moderate

AmazonGoodreads
So! For today's Tasty Delights...I'm actually reviewing a cookbook in addition to putting together a recipe. I thought it might be fun to work some into the blog now and again. So my first go at it is...Meatless All Day. Perfect since I'm a vegetarian and always looking for new vegetarian friendly dishes that are both easy, tasty and healthy. And Meatless All Day totally delivered! From a nicely detailed introduction with suggestions and cooking tips to gorgeous photos and mouth watering recipes Meatless All Day was a culinary win and will keep me busy in the kitchen for weeks trying everything out. The price I think is very reasonable as well coming in at around $14 on Amazon.

A little breakdown on parts of the cookbook then a tasty recipe that omg was SO good!

Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway w/ Jill Shalvis!

A quickie little excerpt and giveaway from Jill Shalvis! Check it out yall and let me know what you think. She's one of my faves :) ~Anna
Becca Thorpe has uprooted her life and escaped to the beach. Now's her chance to get away from city living, throw caution to the ocean winds, and live in the moment. Especially if the moment includes the deliciously sexy surfer she meets shortly after arriving in Lucky Harbor. Something about the dark intensity of Sam's eyes and the thrill she gets at his touch convinces her to stay awhile.

Boatbuilder and investment genius Sam Brody is a self-made man who knows how dangerous it can be to mix business and pleasure. But he can't resist offering Becca a job just to hear her laugh and have her near. Yet when her brother comes to town asking for help, will he tempt her back to her glamorous life in the city? Or do Sam and little Lucky Harbor have a chance to win Becca's heart?

In IT'S IN HIS KISS I had fun making up nicknames for the heroine and hero to call each other. He calls her Tough Girl -- well earned as she is more than a little independent -- cough, stubborn as hell, cough... And she calls him Sexy Grumpy Surfer, also well earned because in the beginning, he is exactly that. Sexy AND grumpy.  :) I went on to use other nicknames as well, including Sam calling Becca "Peeper" and not because she has big eyes but because she peeks out her windows in the mornings and watches him surf. Here's an excerpt to explain.  ~Jill Shalvis

Oh yes. I'm smitten. I would LOVE to be part of the Ladies Who Lunch and their delectable men. Signed, Sealed, Delivered...delivered everything I adore about contemporary romance. Fabulous characters, steam, passion, friendship and a romance that while it might not have had the most...conventional of starts was touching, sweet and perfectly imperfect.

Review/Quote-tastic (68)- *shakes fist* --Show Me, Baby by Cherise Sinclair

Join us every Monday and share a favorite quote that's grabbed ya for one reason or another.

Everyone's welcome to join in. Authors, bloggers, readers. The more the merrier! Just grab the button and toss up your post :)

No blog? No worries, just leave your favorites in the comment section.
Oh I do love the Shadowlands. And this week's Quote-tastic is from the new novella from Cherise Sinclair. This is a set of novellas from different authors that are connected by a girl from current times that finds herself trapped in a story she read and only able to stay alive by telling the King different tales she remembers so he'll spare her life to hear more. And this time it's Jake and Rainie from the Shadowlands story. Kinda neat but other than the intro the "story teller" doesn't come into play again during the novella.

Anyways. This one was pretty hot and had some great scenes. I love these two moments. The first for his response and the second for hers.

Sleep With the Lights On (Brown and de Luca #1) by Maggie Shayne

Thriller Romance Review

Rachel de Luca has found incredible success writing self-help books. But her own blindness and the fact that her troubled brother has gone missing have convinced her that positive thinking is nothing but bull. Her cynicism wavers when a cornea transplant restores her sight. The new eyes seem to give her new life, until they prove too good to be true and she starts seeing terrifying visions of brutal murders crimes she soon learns are all too real.

Detective Mason Brown's own brother recently died, leaving behind a horrific secret. In atonement, Mason donated his brother's organs, though he's kept the fact quiet. Now he wants to help Rachel find her brother, but when he discovers the shocking connection between her visions and his own brother, he suddenly has to do everything in his power to save her from a predator who is somehow still hunting from beyond the grave.

Type: Thriller/Mystery
Heat: 1 out of 5
Rating: 4 out of 5

Amazon | All Romance | Book Depository | BAM | Goodreads

Oooo creeptastic! Sleep With the Lights On seriously made me want to do just that as Rachel searches for her missing brother and starts having visions of brutal murders along the way and maybe a couple tingly flashes of the detective that's in charge of the case.

Rock the Blog (3)--Jump breaks & emails

Rock the Blog is a "How To" for bloggers!

From graphics to html and all kinds of bloggery goodness!

Since I'm based on Blogger most posts will revolve around the Blogger platform though some ideas may apply to Wordpress as well.

Using Jump Breaks for posts & emails!

Alright! I was asked a bit back how I get only part of my blog posts to publish in my emails and
on my blog page with a <read more> tag that you click and it takes you to the full post.

This is something I LOVE and that I'm really glad I started doing for a couple reasons I'll explain below and really appreciate when other bloggers have implemented them.

Dark Spirit (Spirit Wild #2) by Kate Douglas

Romy Sarika has spent much of her life suffering at the hands of a sadistic cult leader. Twenty years earlier she watched him kill her mother, and now she awaits the same fate. But when the self-proclaimed prophet orders Romy killed, the wolf part of her rises up and for the first time she shifts. Managing to save herself, she leaves death and chaos in her wake.

Alone in the woods and badly injured, Romy is found by Jace Wolf and Gabe Cheval, two powerful and striking Chanku who help her heal and simultaneously unleash sensual desires in her that are as new and intense as her wolf-like abilities. But just as Romy’s opening herself to this new erotic world and the passionate connections she’s forming with both men, danger is closing in.

Bent on revenge and driven by bloodlust, cult members are pursuing the trio. Discovery could mean not just Romy’s death but destruction of the Chanku way of life. With their lives at stake and the Chanku race in jeopardy, the three must fight to save themselves and the future of their proud race.

Type: Paranormal Romance
Heat: 4 out of 5--though limited
Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Amazon | Book Depository | BAM | Goodreads

I always enjoy Douglas and her Chanku--basically shifers in this world. They're interesting and steamy and have a little laughter mixed in now and again. Totally works. And this time it was all about Romy who is running for her life after escaping the cult she was born into and that's hunting her because she's shifted into a wolf for the first time.  And, well, because they're assholes. *nods*

With support from her childhood best friends, Lanie and Stella, Jill attempts to piece her life back together. With nightmares plaguing her dreams and the struggles of constant grief over Jay’s passing, Stella and Lanie keep near constant vigilance over her.

In the process of settling the estate, Jill learns that her husband was not quite the man she thought he was. She finds herself transported to the small beach town of Oak Island, North Carolina. But the fairy tale ending she envisioned no longer exists. She must face the reality that Jay is gone as she finds herself having a chance at love one more time.

Safe and Sound follows a yearlong journey of love, loss, friendship, and conquering the unexpected.

Morning TS! Welcome to herding cats! I can't wait to hear a little dish about Safe & SoundAlright, say you had 10 seconds to hook someone what would you tell them about Jill's journey?
On the surface it's a love story but when your done reading you will see it's so much more than just another love story. It's also a story about loss, friendship and hope.

The Reluctant Governess (Ladies Unlaced #3) by Maggie Robinson

A secretary for the renowned Evensong Agency, Eliza Lawrence may have a pretty face, but she’s much prouder of her mind and her morals. When she’s pressed into temporary governess duty as a favor to her boss, she doesn’t expect to bend one bit for the rakish Nicholas Raeburn. Not even when he opens the door to her half-dressed…

Despite his bad reputation, Nicholas is a man of honor. To Nick’s way of thinking, he doesn’t need any help raising his daughter, Domenica. If only he weren’t so drawn to the meddlesome woman’s sparkling wit and uncommon beauty…

But when an act of misplaced chivalry goes seriously awry, resulting in mayhem and almost murder, Eliza becomes the only woman he can depend upon. Nick will do anything to protect his family, but who will protect him from falling in love with his reluctant governess?

Type: Historical Romance
Heat: 3 out of 5-- though not too much
Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Amazon | All Romance | BAM | Goodreads

Not even gonna lie. The cover--which is gorgeous!--and the title--ack a governess!-- totally had me lusting over this one. I mean. How could I resist I ask you? I couldn't! I tell you. I just couldn't! Heh. And I'm glad I gave The Reluctant Governess a go. It was my first from Robinson and she totally has me wanting to read more.

The quick of it is that Nick needs a governess for his little girl Sunny. Or rather his auntie-in-law thinks he needs a governess for her. But Nick is the most unusual of employers. He's an artist and tends to paint and photograph women *gasp* a la natural! Scandalous! He's rather free with rules and scoffs at Society. Something the very prim and proper Eliza--who has been sent as a temporary emergency governess-has a thing or two to say about. Whew boy...does she!

Rating: 5 out of 5 *Pick of the Litter*

So, I read Virgin River...ages ago and the review kinda got lost in my drafts folder but I wanted to post it now because this was just an amazing read. Carr blew me away with her writing and the story of Mel and Jack as she comes to the small town of Virgin River for a fresh start and finds so much more than she expected from both the town and a hunky former Marine that catches her eye.

Reaper's Property (Reapers MC #1) by Joanna Wylde

Marie doesn’t need a complication like Horse. The massive, tattooed, badass biker who shows up at her brother’s house one afternoon doesn’t agree. He wants Marie on his bike and in his bed. Now.

But Marie just left her abusive jerk of an ex-husband and she’s not looking for a new man. Especially one like Horse—she doesn’t know his real name or where he lives, she’s ninety percent certain he’s a criminal and that the “business” he talks with her brother isn’t website design. She needs him out of her life, which would be a snap if he’d just stop giving her mind-blowing orgasms.

Horse is part of the Reapers Motorcycle Club, and when he wants something, he takes it. What he wants is Marie, but she’s not interested in becoming “property of”.

Then her brother steals from the club. Marie can save him by giving Horse what he wants—at home, in public, on his bike… If she’s a very, very good girl, she’ll get lots more of those orgasms only he can offer, and he’ll let her brother live.

Maybe.

Type: Contemporary Romance--MC Romance
Heat: 3 out of 5
Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Amazon | All Romance | Book Depository | BAM | Goodreads

I finally made it back to book one! lol I totally read Reapers MC out of order. Started with book two then hit up three and four before landing back at Reaper's Property to see how it all began. And whew what a beginning! See. Horse..yep that's the hero ::snort:: has a thing for this woman Marie. And Marie's brother is a total putz who is working for Horse's MC and opts to scam them a little. So Horse takes Marie as collateral. Yeah. *nods* She wants her bro to live...she's gonna have to make nice with Horse and basically do whatever he wants whenever he wants. And he wants inside her something fierce. Talk about some dramas!

Midnight Vengeance (Midnight #4) by Lisa Marie Rice

Morton “Jacko” Jackman isn’t afraid of anything. He’s a former Navy SEAL sniper, and he’s been in more firefights than most people have had hot meals. Lauren Dare scares the crap out of him.

Gorgeous, talented and refined, she’s the type of woman who could never be interested in a roughneck like him. So he’s loved her fiercely in secret, taken her art classes, and kept a watchful but comfortable distance. Until now.

Lauren had finally found a home in Portland, far from her real identity, far from the memories of her mother’s death, and outside the reaches of the drugged-out psycho who’s already tried to kill her twice. One tiny misstep—a single photograph—has shattered it all. She has no choice but to run again, but this time she’ll give herself a proper farewell: one night with Jacko.

Their highly charged emotional encounter changes everything. In Jacko’s arms there cannot be fear, there can only be pleasure. Anyone wishing her harm will have to pass through him, and Jacko is a hard man to kill.

Type: Romantic Suspense
Heat: 3 out of 5
Rating: 1.5 out of 5

Amazon | All Romance | Goodreads

Well. Midnight's Vengeance unfortunately did not work for me. It had a great set up--heroine on the run for her life and the man who is totally smitten with her stepping in to protect her-- and potential but the actual writing just didn't mesh well for me at all which was surprising since I've enjoyed others from Rice.

The quick of it is that Lauren has been living under a fake identity since her mother's death. A kinda sorta family member took exception to her inheriting everything and decided if she was dead he'd get the family empire. Not true but then crazy is crazy. And for 2 years she's been somewhat safe with her fake identity which has now been compromised. Before she can run though her friends set out to keep her safe. Who better since they run a super elite security firm.

Bound to Danger (Deadly Ops #2) by Katie Reus

At a benefit dinner, community activist Maria Cervantes overhears two men plotting a terrorist attack that could rock Miami to its core. But before she can alert authorities, she’s almost killed in a massive explosion—and wakes up in a hospital with no memory of what happened. As the sole survivor of the attack, she is now a person of interest to the NSA—and especially to Agent Cade O’Reilly. Because Maria is the one woman Cade has never been able to forget.

Years ago, they were closer than either was willing to admit—until Cade disappeared when Maria needed him most. Now he’s sticking by her, whether she likes it or not. Because the memories locked inside her mind could hold vital clues to the next attack. Because terrorists want her dead—and because he never wants to let her go again.

Type: Romantic Suspense
Heat: 3 out of 5--though limited
Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Amazon | All Romance | Book Depository | BAM | Goodreads

Oh yeah. I am always up for a little romantic suspense. Throw in a second chance at love, military men and some sweet letters exchanged while he was deployed years earlier? And I'm in heaven! Bound by Danger was quite the ride as Maria's life is thrown into serious danger after overhearing a terrorist plot and becoming the only survivor of one of their bombings. The it's thrown into even more emotional turmoil when the man who comes in to keep her safe is none other than Cade. The man she loved years ago and who had vanished from her life without a word. Gah!

Today's quote is from a new Rom-Suspense series out next week about a group of men and women who are part of a secret not quite government backed group that has some fishy things happening within it's rank. It was a good one--review is down below--and is out tomorrow. This quote is between the heroine and one of her team mates. And omg I seriously want his book. Like...now. He was such a fun addition and a little naughty plus he loves romance novels. How could I not love him already?! lol
