What Happens When A Fake Relationship Becomes Oh, So Real

Tension crackles between New York model, Olivia Winters, and Rockfort agent Max Lyon as they arrive at the first meeting of the Donley High School ten-year reunion committee.  Olivia has interrupted her successful New York modeling career to come back to Howard County, Maryland, to find out who killed her former high school best friend.  Police have labeled the homicide an isolated incident, but Olivia sees a pattern, in which a clever killer has been using different murder methods to confuse the cops.

Since Olivia is not equipped to investigate on her own, she hires Max Lyon to help.  Not only does he have the P.I. skills to solve the case, but he also knows the territory, since he went to the same high school.  Of course, he was the bad boy in a class a few years ahead of Olivia.  He might have ended up as a criminal, but a concerned cop took the young hood under his wing and straightened him out. In fact, Max joined the Baltimore City police department and stayed until a bullet wound put him on desk duty. Now he’s completely recovered.

Pretending to be Olivia’s fiancĂ© gives Max access to the reunion group, where everyone is a murder suspect.

Olivia had her own problems growing up.  Her male chauvinist father set rules that were hard for the women in the family to follow. And she let peer pressure force her into some situations she later regretted.  As soon as she graduated from high school, she left for New York, where she hooked up with an agent who saw her potential and guided her career.

Now she and Max are pretending to be engaged and living together in the house where she grew up.  From the first, they find themselves fighting the attraction that simmers between them.  But when the reunion meeting triggers a dream about a party Olivia attended that ended in mass panic, Max finds himself in Olivia’s bed trying to comfort her, then trying to distance himself from her because he thinks she’s not telling him the whole truth about her past.

When Max thinks he has an opportunity to get some information about her, he leaves Olivia alone and heads for a secret meeting.  In reality, the killer has lured him away and is able to break into Olivia’s house where he murders another woman who came begging for help.

Max makes it back in time to save Olivia, but the crisis marks a turning point in their relationship.  Both are able to admit their feelings for the other, and Olivia is finally willing to tell Max about a frightening incident she’s tried to forget.

Now he understands why she was so closed up, but the two of them will not be able to grab their happy ending until they solve a long-ago murder and figure out the identity of the killer.
