3 stars-- My Highland Rebel (Highland Trouble #2) by Amanda Forester

My Highland Rebel. Okay so Cormac's daddy is basically the devil and terrorizes the lands and wants Core to follow in his footsteps which is so not Core's plan. But he flubs up and finds himself needing to outwit his dad and save a pretty girl, her people, a herd of monks and a stash of books--without her realizing who he really is.

I struggled a bit with this one. But it wasn't totally the book's fault. I'd confused this with book 2 of the series I read of hers and spent like 40% of the book confused as all hell how it could be the follow up to the one I read. *hangs head* So I put it aside back in Jan to try again another day. And that brought us to May.

There's drama and deception and struggle between good and evil as Core tries to save everyone and falls for Jyne. I liked them both overall and their desire to do what they want not what their families expect-- Core wanting to be a scholar not a warlord and Jyne wanting some adventure instead of being overly protected by her large family.

In the end, though, we just never got on the right foot. I didn't hate it. There was nothing really wrong with it-- other than not thinking the heroine was all that bright for not being able to figure out who Core was when in disguise-- a helmet, basically-- but overall it was an okay read with a nice ending.
Cormac Maclean would rather read than rampage, but his fearsome warlord father demands that he prove himself in war. Cormac chooses what he thinks is an easy target, only to encounter a fiery Highland lass leading a doomed rebellion and swearing revenge on him.

Jyne Cambell is not about to give up her castle without a fight, even though her forces are far outnumbered. She's proud, hot-blooded and hot-tempered, and Cormac falls for her hard.

It's going to take all of Cormac's ingenuity to get Jyne to surrender gracefully-both to his sword and to his heart...
