4 stars-- When It's Right (Montana Men, #2) by Jennifer Ryan

When It's Right didn't hold any punches. The first half of the book did a number on me and held me in it's grip. It was awesome.
The Gist: Gillian has escaped a life of abuse and has been sent to her grandfather's ranch until she recovers. Thing is...she's never met him. Being around strange men...make her nervous. Her grandfather's right hand man...definitely makes her nervous but not in an entirely bad way.
Whew, yall. These characters.

Blake is a hero anyone would beg for. He's kind, generous, gentle. He has a way about him that just pulls you in and makes you feel safe. But he can be all yummy alpha male, too. He was just a kind heart.

And Gillian. Lordy. She's one tough chickie. The first half she was like a wounded feral cat. Couldn't handle kindness, didn't trust, just wanted to protect all her soft vulnerable parts even from those trying to help her. It was hard watching her struggle with her new situation and having people care about her. The girl doesn't give up, though.
Blake caught her hesitation and indecision and knew exactly where this conversation derailed. "He didn't hurt that horse. He saved him from a son of a bitch who neglected and hurt him. Bud wouldn't hurt a horse. No one on this ranch would hurt them. I'm trying to nurse him back to health.

He spoke to her back, but she listened, even if her gaze remained on Boots. Blake knew how she felt. Seeing that poor thing broke his heart, too. He imagined she saw herself in the horse.

"She thinks I hurt that horse," Bud whispered, disbelief in his words.

"She just wants to know if she's going to be safe here," Blake whispered back. "If she thinks you hurt that horse, it isn't a far leap for her to think you'd treat her the same. Give her a minute to work it out. I don't imagine she's ever felt safe. Anywhere."
The romance was fast but slow. They have an instant connection and attraction but because of what she's gone through it's half a step forward and three giant leaps backward for a while. It was sweet and touching and goodness once they get going had some nice heat, too.

My only issue--and why this didn't get a 5 which it sure felt like during the first half of the book--was the 20 year old heroine was just too good at EVERYTHING. She can fix a truck better than anyone on the ranch, she's better at doing the business's books and payroll than those doing them, she's a natural at riding horses and racing them and training them and doing a better job than the men who's job it is. It was just a bit much after a while and by the second half of the book I was rolling my eyes when she aced yet another thing her first go-round. lol

All in all, though. When It's Right was an incredibly touching read.
Wide open sky, rolling green hills . . . Gillian Tucker could get used to life in the country—one far from the violence she left behind in San Francisco. Warily accepting an invitation to the Montana ranch that belongs to her grandfather, a man she's never met, Gillian hopes this is the haven she seeks. A sexy, overbearing cowboy who shines a light on her well-hidden dreams is not at all part of her plans.

Blake Bowden's reckless past is far behind him, and as a newly named co-owner of Three Peaks Ranch, he's not taking any chances. Until a beautiful, haunted woman arrives, igniting a desire he shouldn't feel. His partner's granddaughter is strictly off limits. But the longer Gillian's there, the stronger the pull grows between them. And when a new danger surfaces, Blake will do anything to keep her safe…even if it means risking everything for her heart.
