4 stars-- Hot Asset (21 Wall Street #1) by Lauren Layne

Whoa. It's been an age since I did a quote-tastic post. Sorry about that for those who have joined in on them. I'm going to try to start doing them on Thursdays again. Fingers crossed, yall.

Anywho. This scene cracked me up. I love a cheeky character. lol

I look through the peephole, then rear back. It’s so not Mrs. Peonta. To make sure I’m not hallucinating, I put my face back up to the door. Nope, still there. I’m still looking at Ian Bradley standing in my hallway, a bottle of wine under one arm, takeout bag dangling from his fingers. I put a hand over my pounding heart. All of this, just from seeing the guy through a peephole. When did I turn into that girl? He rolls his eyes at my delay.

“Open the door, Ms. McKenzie.”

“What are you doing here?” I call through the door.

“Trying to feed you,” he says, lifting the bag. “Also, to get in your pants,” he says loudly, clearly for the benefit of my neighbors. “Maybe find out if your curtains match your—”

“Oh, for God’s sake,” I say, jerking the door open and pulling him inside. “How old are you?”

“Old enough to know what I want, clever enough to know how to get it,” he says with a wink as he sets the bag and wine on my kitchen counter.

Oh dear. Best way to meet your future mate? Definitely not when he's a Wall Street hotshot and you've been sent by the SEC to investigate him for insider trading. Yikes! I had a great time with Hot Asset. Some steamy goodness and sharp banter. A good time was had.

Ian was quite the handful. Work hard, play harder...words he takes seriously. He doesn't deny himself anything but he's worked his ass off to pull himself up from foster care to unimaginable wealth. He's a good guy under all his wild ways, too. Gives back and cares for those around him. And Lara. Well she is all about the job and has a fierce drive and sense of what's right or wrong. Early on I wasn't sure I'd be able to handle her but in the end I found I loved her as much as Ian.

Once they got past the grrr argy parts of her trying to nail him for insider trading I loved them together. Steamy and all kinds of yum.

I did find the topic interesting. Especially in our political climate. Not the exact same thing as we've seen before but a man accused of something where it's dang impossible for him to prove his innocence yet every time he gets close to doing so another unsubstantiated "gotcha" is thrown at him that he has the impossible task of trying to prove isn't true. Pretty dang infuriating.

Did I figure things out? Nearly. I was a person off but figured out the whys way before they did. But I still enjoyed the ride and seeing them figure things out and win the day.

Some steam, some heart, some romance and frustrations. Hot Asset was definitely worth the read.

Ian Bradley is the definition of a Wall Street hotshot: seven-figure salary, designer suits, and a corner office. His drive off the floor is just as potent. Every woman who knows him has felt the rush. But now he’s met his match in Lara McKenzie—a woman with the power to bring Ian to his knees.

An ambitious, whip-smart daughter of FBI agents, Lara is a rising star in fighting white-collar crime. Her latest case—the investigation of Ian Bradley for insider trading—could make her career. She knows a scoundrel when she sees one. Ian fits the bill: a cocky, ridiculously handsome bad boy with a slick swagger.

She’ll do anything to prove he’s guilty. He’ll do anything to prove he’s not. But it’s only a matter of time before their fierce battle of wits gets oh so hot and personal. Now, taking down Ian has become more than business for Lara. It’s become a pleasure—and there’s more at risk than she ever dreamed.
