3.5 stars-- Marrying Mr. English (The English Brothers 0.5) by Katy Regnery

Aw Marrying Mr. English was a sweet Christmas romance as you jump back in time to the parents from the series and watch them find their happily ever after way back in the 1980s.
The Gist: Tom is in a bind. If he doesn't find a wife in the next couple days...he'll lose his inheritance. Eleanora is a down on her luck waitress who's more than willing to join forces in exchange for a boost to her bank account. Perfect! A quickie marriage and they'll both have everything they wanted and can go their separate ways. But...things rarely go as planned.
Yeah, Tom and Eeanora were adorably sweet. Their lives are opposites in many ways-- social status, education, financial backgrounds all vastly different. But they had things in common as well-- love of reading and poetry, a deep loneliness, wanting to be different from the places they came from. The two fit each other so perfectly and the sparks between them were magnificent.

I loved watching their whirlwind romance. Seeing them confront life's difficulties and suddenly having nothing to their name but each other. They were sweet and heartwarming and everything romance should be.

I did have 2 issues.

  • One the heroine slapped the hero when annoyed with him and wanting his attention. Meh.
  • And there were quite a few editing blips in the final copy. It really could have used another look through. So that brought it down to a 3.5.

Overall, though Marrying Mr English was adorably sweet. It's told in two parts and is basically Eleanora telling her daughters-in-law over Christmas festivities how she and her husband fell in love. I read it without reading the other books from the series (all of their sons) and had no troubles but think it might have been even better had I read the other books first then got the little glimpse into the past.

And a quote because I thought it was sweet. She's only 22 and had a pretty hard childhood. Left home at 18 and went to work as a waitress in another state. They were having Christmas dinner a couple days after they married and moved cross country.
"Sorry about breakfast for dinner," she said, spooning eggs onto his empty plate.

"No complaints here," he said, digging in with gusto.

"I never learned to cook much. We made do with a lot of heated-up cans, you know? I really only learned to cook when I moved to Vail."

"Oh," he said, looking up at her with understanding. "You learned to cook at Auntie Rose's Breakfast-All-Day Chalet."

"Exactly." She pushed the eggs around on her plate, and he sense she was feeling sheepish, but suddenly her expression brightened and she looked up at him. "But I can make almost any breakfast food you can think of. Pancakes. Waffles. Sausage bacon, biscuits. Omelets. Eggs any way you want them..."

Her voice trailed off as he looked into her eyes. The reflection of the Christmas lights shone back at him. It was like she was lit up from the inside, and his heart throbbed when he answered, "I'll eat them any way you make them, Eleanora. I'll just be glad it's you giving them to me."

Trust fund playboy, Tom English, was supposed to find a "good woman" and marry her by midnight on his 32nd birthday. If he didn't, his grandfather promised to disinherit him. Unfortunately for Tom, three days before he was set to get married in Vail, his fiance elopes with her skiing instructor leaving Tom high and dry. With only a week before his birthday, it looks like Tom will forfeit his millions.

When Eleanora Watters, a smart, sassy - totally broke - waitress, spies down-on-his-luck Tom English in the breakfast-all-day diner where she works, she doesn't think much of him. He's at least ten years older than she is and he looks like another trust fund jerk with a silver spoon shoved up his...a-hem. But Tom surprises her. Set up on a blind date by Eleanora's cousin, the two bond over books, and after spending just a few hours together, Eleanora offers to marry Tom in order to help him secure his fortune.

After a whirlwind marriage in Las Vegas, Tom and Eleanora begin to realize that they're not as unlikely a match as they once seemed, and their feelings for each other deepen. But when Tom's grandfather sees through their scheme and threatens to cut them off, Tom will have to decide if he wants the money more than the Colorado waitress who seems to be something between "a dream and a miracle."
