Tasty Delights--Chocolate Pretzel Rods

My mom sends me these every Christmas from the chocolate shop up the street.
Not sure why it popped into my head but I thought I try making my own. 

Not that freaking easy! But still kinda fun to figure out how to make them.


The ingredients are pretty simple. Most of the candy supplies (the melting chocolate, sprinkles, etc) came from the craft store. I had the best luck at A.C.Moore. If you make these around Christmas you'll probably have better luck. Red/Green sprinkles are REALLY hard to find in July. 


First step is to melt your chocolate base. I made my own dipping chocolate with one bag of milk chocolate chips and 2-3 Tablespoons of vegetable oil. Microwave in 30 second intervals stirring in between until completely melted. Don't over cook it.

Then pour into your tallest/narrowest glass so when you dip the majority of your pretzel will be coated. 

Using a cooling rack over a pan worked the best for me to keep the chocolate from dripping everywhere and pooling under the pretzels. You can double dip them to get a thicker coating of chocolate but you'll need to let the chocolate firm up between dippings.

Next up is decorating!

Melt some candy chip melts in a variety of colors according to the package instructions then pipe it across each pretzel rod. 

Give the chocolate a little time to set on the pretzels or everything you put on it will roll right off and you'll get that mess down in the next picture. The larger the candy the harder to get it to stick. The mini M&Ms were a real bitch.

While you're doing the decorating bits you might want to pick them up now and again from the rack or they'll stick a bit once they dry. 


And the final product. I think they turned out pretty damn nice! 

If I make these again I'll stick to the striped and sprinkled ones. It was really blasted hard to get those mini m&ms to stay put!

So a fun little project. It does take a little practice but once you get the hang of it not hard. I think they'd make nice gifties to hand out at Christmas (you can even get clear pretzel gift bags at the craft store) or just to have around for a snack.

    1. I think usually you just see them around the holidays. I don't remember seeing them any other time actually. They're pretty good if you like a sweet/salty combo :)

  3. Yum, I'll have to try these. My local chocolate shoppe charges $5.0 for 3 of these dipped pretzels. They are sooo good but I can't justify the price for a few moments of bliss.

    1. Oh my goodness. Yeah that's a little expensive. It's a little pricey getting all the ingredients for these but they make a TON of them. Have fun with it :)
