The herd. I get asked about the herd...often. So I figured I'd let them hijack the blog now and again and them tell you all about themselves. They're characters for sure. Anywho. Today...the herd boy.

Randomly Random-- So. The Train happened. And it was something!

*waves* Hey guys! It's been a little quiet on the blog the last few days. If you're in the FB group you already know I went to Florida! It was the first time I've been able to get home in 8 years (ack!) and was my first time taking the train on a long trip too. 

Figured I'd share a little about the trip :) I'll be around to catch up on everyone's blogs the next few days and will get things going on here too. Didn't realize until I got home my mom didn't have wifi so my laptop was useless and she's in the middle of the country so my phone was pretty useless for updates and such too. *flails* lol

More Cat Thursday Posts

August has been a hard month with the herd. My mom lost one of her boys suddenly and this week I lost the herd eldest, Piedmont. He was one of my semi-ferals and we're guessing around 15 years old. He was a rather...difficult boy most of his life. Very strong, very anti doing whatever any human said and would run and fight until you left him be. But man we loved him. This week he started crashing and it turned out he had kidney disease. He spent a few days at the vet on meds and letting us love on him (a rarity) and finally decided he was ready to go so we had to say good-bye.

I really don't want this to be a sad post though.

I wanted to share a bit about my boy and ask that yall share happy memories from your herd angels too.

 Today is all about Baby G. Who joined our family just over 7 years ago.

I can't believe the herd babe is 7!! Oh my word.

G totally rules the house and has her mama wrapped around her paw.

She's a "helper", a screamer, a snuggler when she wants to be and even if she can be ornery she's pretty damn perfect.

Oh and for yall who have  e-known her for a while. Her real name is Gladys.

I'm disappearing for a little while...

Hey guys--Just wanted to fill you in on what's going on on my side of things right now. I'm going to be pretty quiet the next week or so. Things will still be going live on the blog and I hope you'll check them out and leave the authors some love...I just won't be around much myself. I lost a herd babe very suddenly last week then yesterday had to rush two more to the emergency vet. We're not sure what's going on with them but it's connected and spreading through the herd. About 1/2 the herd is showing signs of early to severe liver failure.  The others are all doing fine so far just being watched very closely.

So yesterday was herd baby Gladys' birthday! She turned 5 years old. Whew it's flown by! 

I've had Gladys since the day she was born and abandoned with her siblings (without their mom) at one of the local shelters. 

 She's still a tiny thing, sitting in my lap at this very moment, and rules over us all.
Thought I'd share some of her pictures from growing up and some of the more recent ones for today's post :)

Hello kittens! I'm back from my trip (had a great time!) and *knock on wood* hopefully life will calm down a bit over here :)

Decided to use some of my own photos for this week's Cat Thursday. Each of these babies were part of my rescue at one point or another.

Otis. This guy turned out to be HUGE and have short hair. LOL You just never know how they'll grow up.

Oh my goodness this is my herd this week! 

They've joined forces to drive their momma up a wall. 

Herd baby Gladys, especially, has decided it is her mission in life to "help" me on the laptop by dramatically tossing herself across the keyboard and accidentally deleting entire posts I'm working on. 

I luvs her! ;)

There's a bunch of authors and their kitties posts supporting her cause. It's a non-profit as well. So go check her out. She's a darling girl and just had her birthday :)

I'm a bed girl too. It's my favorite place to read. Either in my room or the guest room that has a comfy day bed.

These monster's are usually part of the deal too. Either them or part of the kitty herd. If they're being terrors I end up in the guest room since it's off limits to the herd :)

Zachary (A to Z)

Hope everyone's had a great time with the A to Z challenge! 

I really enjoyed it and think I'll play again next year. Was nice getting to know all of yall! 

And now my Z. 

My "little" Zachary was my first pup all on my own. I got him my first semester at college. Adopted him from one of the local rescues when he was just 4 months old.

Zack was a pretty happy pup. He loved playing out in the snow and could spend hours kicking up snow then chasing it down the hill like it was a toy. 

Preston's Penis (A to Z)

I'm going to tell you a little story about Preston and his penis. It's a story of tragedy, loss and extreme embarrassment. At least on the part of his mom. See, 11 years ago this May I decided, on a whim mind you, to become a turtle mom to Preston and Roma . They were the damned cutest things. Hardly bigger than a quarter and supposedly SO easy to care for. Yeah. Ooookay. 

It all started 5 years later, late one night right before we had to leave for a wedding in Italy. We found Preston in a tank full of pink water, on his basking rock with his little buddy stuck in the out position. Why is it stuck out there in the open? Well, because Roma said "NO" and Preston decided not to listen and wound up with a nice set of beak marks on his tender bits. This was one of those "only in our household" kinda things.

Off we go to the emergency vet where they had to call in a specialist. Don't ya just love it. We had to leave him there, and send a message to our pet sitter, who thankfully was a vet student, that Preston and his boys were in her hands and she'd have to make all of his decisions for him. Poor girl. 

When we got to Rome we arrived to the the unfortunate news that Preston had to have his penis amputated and was now pouting and refused to eat or bask. He was not a happy boy.

You'd think that would be the end of the story, right? Oh, no. Not in our household. When we got home a couple weeks later Preston had recovered from his loss so we figured we could put him back with Roma. Well, that went real well because the damn thing grew back! Okay, so not really but damn. When someone says amputated penis you'd think amputated penis, right? Well his doc had amputated just the itty bitty tip of it and called it a day. Back to the emergency vet! Where they amputated the hell out of that sucker since he obviously couldn't be trusted with it. 

So many follow up visits. So many embarrassing turn your cheeks bright pink moments. If you've ever been to a vet school you know you end up waiting for a while in a huge waiting room with a ton of other people. I'd be sitting there with my turtle in his carrier and everyone would keep sneaking glances at us. Well, yeah, we're usually the only non dog/kitty in the area. Finally some brave pet parent, and usually a guy, would go....

"So, how do you know a turtle is sick?"

<cue me turning pink>

"Well, his penis was bleeding."

<aaannnnnd cue cricket chirping silence, male flinching and pets pulled closer to their parents>

Yeah. I was LOVING being a turtle mom at that moment ;)

For years after the great penis amputations whenever we'd go to the vet school they'd hear our name, there would be a little pause and then "Oh! You're Preston's mom!" Yeah, we were quite the talk around town. Everyone came to see Preston during his time there and they deemed my little girl Roma "Bobbit"

Even after his second amputation Preston just wouldn't give up his pursuit of Roma. So, he now lives with his grandmom in Florida for his safety and Roma, the penis biter, lives with me in North Carolina. She's a handful and tends to be a grump but has become friends with a frog that took up in her pond on the patio. 

So that's my most embarrassing Pet Mom story and how Preston lost his penis. Only in my herd.

Gladys Joy (A to Z)

Today....the most important "G", the house baby, Gladys Joy. Sorry if this gets a little long :) She's draped over me right now and keeps yowling at me every time I move. This girl does NOT like to share her momma's attention even if I'm bragging on her.  I adopted her back in 2008, or rather, she claimed me and then waited until I finally figured it all out and filled out paperwork with the rescue. 

Gladys was my first bottle baby and my little one did not have an easy start to life. She and her 3 siblings were left in a metal county shelter drop box in the middle of a March night, still wet from being born,  and without their mom to keep them warm. 

She was a screamer from day one as you can see :)
