Whisper to Me (Between Breaths #3) by Christina Lee

At college, Rachel has a reputation for being a sarcastic flirt with a thing for star athletes. No one at school knows that she’d had her heart ripped to shreds by her high school sweetheart, who’d driven them both off the side of the road on a borrowed motorcycle, and then abandoned her. No one knows the real Rachel Mattson—except one person…

Ever since he helped nurse his sister’s feisty best friend back to health, pierced bass player Kai Nakos has been head over heels in love. But the supposed bad boy can’t risk letting Rachel know the truth—especially now that the two of them are back in their hometown for the summer, together for the first time since the months following that fateful night. Never mind that Rachel’s ex is back, groveling for her forgiveness.

Shaken by her ex’s return, Rachel finds herself turning to the one guy she knows she can trust. Kai is willing to hide his feelings for her, just to have Rachel touch him again. After all, this is only a temporary fling. Until it becomes something more. But maybe it had been more all along.

Yeah. In one fell swoop Christina Lee has totally just become my crack. I seriously couldn't put Whisper to Me down! omg it was addictive. I just...needed...to read...one...more...chapter. From amazing characters to some creative body adornments, best friends becoming lovers and a sweet romance I was just a goner as Kai and Rachel forge a new path for themselves.

The quick of it is that life has brought both Kai and Rachel home for the summer as they try to figure out what they're doing with their lives. The two have been best of friends for years and each harboring a secret crush on the other. Something that's totally off the table seeing Kai is also the older brother of Rachel's best girlfriend. *rubs hands together* Ahhh how I love that storyline! But living in close quarters for the summer and with sexual tension riding them hard denying their attraction and need for one another just isn't in the cards...thank God! Because damn it was excellent watching these two. This was such a lust-able book. Let me tell you...

Alright so the lust-able-ness of Whisper to Me.

I didn't remember I'd left soup on the stove...until 2 hours later when I finally flipped the last page. Yep. I've got some mad kitchen talents there.

Rachel was a pretty awesome heroine
  • She's a survivor. No matter what. She fought and overcame tremendous odds after a near fatal wreck and didn't let it keep her down
  • She's got a dirty mouth. I just. Well. I love that. *nods*
  • She's pretty blunt with what she's thinking and I really liked that.
  • She's not perfect...but she deals. I liked that she was a little lost after being viciously abandoned by her boyfriend after her accident. She coped however she could and while I didn't love her choices I totally got her reasoning
Kai was freaking lickable!
  • *whispers* there's a pierced cock *and the crowd goes wild* I loves me a pierced cock. Plus there's pierced ears, tongue and nipples happening. Daaaaaammmmn!
  • He plays the upright bass. Insta-lust people. I so had a thing for a bass player in college. I get it Rachel. I so get it. It's hot as fucking hell!
  • He's a total caretaker. He may be a screw up and not have a clue what he's doing with his life but the man is a total lover and cares for the people around him. Spending time with Rachel during her recovery, looking out for her, etc.
  • He tries to rock some dirty talk. A baby dirty talker maybe? But he tried.
  • He does rock some skinny jeans. Not usually my thing...but he made them work
  • Did I mention a pierced cock? Well. Gets a double mention. I mean total love! Though I would have liked to see it in action a wee bit more. *nods* Totally NSFW but this is what he was sporting.
Her fingers glided down my chest to my pants. Unbuttoning the top button and unzipping partway, her thumb swiped over the top of my dick. Ah, fuck.

"Rach, wait." I gasped when her fingers slipped further inside and she clutched me with her warm hand.

"You..." Her hand stilled and her lips parted. "You're...pierced."

I raised an eyebrow. "I tried to warn you."

Her finger looped through the ring on the underside of my head, making me shudder.

"How in the hell does this even work?"

I attempted to rein in my harsh breaths. "I've been told it works pretty well." I grunted out.
Delicious tension!
There wasn't a ton of full on sex happening in this one but lordy what was there. And the weeks of foreplay before hand. And all the make you tingle tension. Totally worked for me. I really liked that they'd known each other for years and were already close to each other. It added a really great element to their dynamic and made for some interesting moments as things got steamy and a bit awkward too.

    The parents...were actually parents!

Well. This may seem a silly one to some but I loved that both of their parents were active, cared and just there for them. So many times in NA or even just general romance the parents have either died in some horrible accident, are absentee parents or extremely abusive. I get it makes for some drama but damn I loved that both of their parents were steady and involved in their lives. The relationships might not be perfect but they were there. And healthy. And loving. And I totally thought that was am amazing addition to the story.

All in all, Christina Lee impressed me with Whisper to Me. While it wasn't the most original storyline it was one that hooked me in and wouldn't let go until I'd read the very last page. I would have loved a couple more scenes with Kai and Rachel in full out relationship mode (and okay a little more steam) but overall it was a great read. And a sweet romance that had me smiling and rooting these two on as they took a risk and changed their relationship forever and grew into pretty amazing people with each other's support and love. *girly sigh*

Have you read Lee? What did you think?
Have a favorite friends to lovers romance?
    Or best friend's sibling romance?

    More Lee on herding cats!
