The Monthly Herd: July Recap + link up!

Thank God July is over! For yall that have followed the blog you know life was hard this month with most of the herd being very sick. It was pretty devastating. I lost 3 to what we think was contaminated catnip. We're on the mend now thank goodness and the last sick herd babe had an incredible check up today and was pretty much given the all clear. Woot! I took a good amount of time away from the blog to try to get them healthy again and just to recover emotionally. I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone that came by or sent emails with prayers and well wishes to the herd babes. I was pretty much a mess and even if I wasn't able to respond to everyone it was so greatly appreciated you have no idea.

We're going into August with a positive outlook and trying to let go of the sadness of July. I'm spending a lot of time with the herd and loving on them which has made things a lot easier :) Though at this point you can seriously hear their sighs when I come in a room because OMG mom you are hovering! lol This is Francie a little bit ago. She's feeling much better :)

I did manage to have a number of things happen on the blog even with me not being here. Thank goodness for having things pre-scheduled! So below is what did manage to get done this month. There's also a link up for those who do recaps if yall'd like to link yours in.   ~Anna

Bride Of A Scottish Warrior by Adrienne Basso

Newly knighted Sir Ewan Gilroy needs a dowry and a wife, in that order. Though the widowed Lady Grace plans to enter a convent, squandering so much lush beauty - and such a fortune - would surely be its own sin. Grace will not be easily wooed, despite her family's urging and Ewan's famed charm. She challenges him as no woman ever dared, proving his equal in spirit and in passions...

To atone for her past, Grace vows to never remarry - least of all a brash and reckless warrior. Yet whether defending her honor or stoking desires she hardly knew she possessed, Ewan is a man beyond compare. And as their fragile trust is threatened by treachery, Grace must decide whether to reach for the happiness within her grasp - and fight for the love of her bold Highlander...

Well I am just adoring Basso and the amazing romances she creates. Bride of a Scottish Warrior is the second one I've read from her and, seriously, she has me smitten. She's a wonderful storyteller that really wraps you up in her world and transports you to another time--in this case the Scottish Highlands of the 1300s. It's just a fabulous experience.

The quick of it is that Grace and Ewan have met during his quest for a wife. Something Grace has vowed she'll never be again after the tragic death of her husband. But circumstances, family and life may just have different plans for her.

Interview w/ Lauren Layne--wait, you wrote it...where?!!

Hey guys! We've got a new to me author Lauren Layne stopping by today. I just read Only With You and LOVED it. Review is up HERE if you'd like to stop by and check it out! Give our chat a looksee and leave Lauren a nice big welcome!  ~Anna
Cocktail waitress Sophie Dalton doesn't exactly have a life plan. She's perfectly happy being everyone's favorite party girl. But when a Las Vegas bachelorette party goes awry and an uptight businessman mistakes Sophie for a prostitute . . . well, Sophie wonders if it's time to reevaluate her priorities. Swearing off her thigh-high boots for good, Sophie slinks back home with damaged pride-and a jackpot of a hangover.

Yet what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay there. On a trip to Seattle to open a new office, Grayson Wyatt meets his latest employee-who turns out to be the same woman he recently called a hooker. Wealthy and gorgeous, Gray is a man used to getting what he wants. And it doesn't take long to figure out that smart, sassy, sexy Sophie is everything he's been looking for. As their late nights at the office turn into hot morning-afters, they realize their Vegas misunderstanding may lead to the real thing . . .

Mornin' Lauren! Welcome to herding cats! I'm *rubs hands together* ready for some juicy gossip about Only With You! It was such a fun read! I can't believe the hero mistook his heroine for an, erm, working girl! lol Okay....any fun/silly/naughty behind the scenes facts about Only With You? Think Pop-Up Video style.
Oh man, Pop-up video! That just took me back! Okay, let’s see …
(1)    The original title for Only With You was The Lady is a Tramp
(2)    In early versions, I had a fully-developed secondary romance. I later decided to give Will/Brynn their own book and had to cut an EXCELLENT sex scene from this one.

My pick this week isn't quite out yet but gah I just loved this scene and couldn't wait until August to share it. It's a fake mates kinda thing going on between two life long best friends when one gets in a spot of trouble. I just loved their interactions. It's book 3 in the series so a couple books to pick up while you wait :)

Emotionally stunted stick in the mud meets spirited social butterfly who...might be a hooker. Okay, so, not a hooker but that's Gray's first thought when he laid eyes on Sophie during a Las Vegas trip. :snortal: Little did he know she was the one who would shake his world right down to it's foundation. And he might just do the same for her. Only With You was just what I needed this week.

Oh.My.Gosh. I loved these two. Gray and Sophie are so dang...broken! And wonderful. And infuriating. Heartbreaking. Funny. Make you shake your head and pinch the bridge of your nose but love them anyways...perfect.

Gray--and damn that's a sexy name--was handsome and socially awkward. He put his foot in his mouth on more than one occasion as Sophie so elegantly put it...was a gorgeous shithead in a beautiful suit.

Animal Attraction (Animal Magnetism #2) by Jill Shalvis

Sunshine, Idaho, is a quiet ranching town, a perfect place to give injured animals a refuge…or to find one yourself. Veterinarian Dell Connelly suspects there’s a reason his clinic’s uber-efficient receptionist has taken shelter here.

Jade Bennett couldn’t be happier to escape the big-city jungle to work with hurt animals, and have a forlorn stray kitten make its home under her desk…or enjoy the gorgeous views of her ruggedly sexy boss.

Jade is used to planning everything in her life, but Dell’s seductive, alluring ways have sparked an uncontrollable desire. And though Dell has never had time for love, Jade’s strength and sass is the kind of call no red-blooded male can resist…

I lurves me some Jill Shalvis. The woman just writes some killer romances. I wasn't totally on board with book one of the Animal Magnetism series though for some reason but thankfully carried on and picked up Animal Attraction and hot damn this was totally the Shalvis I know and adore. I loved nearly everything about this one as Jade's secretive past is uncovered and she and Dell find a little happiness together and help each other move on and break down each others walls.

Unbeautifully (Undeniable #2) by Madeline Sheehan

Warning: This is not a story about fate or destiny. This is a story about pain, sorrow, and suffering. This is an impulsive whirlwind romance between two lovers that are not meant to be together. Theirs is not a world with sunshine and roses. Instead, their love blossoms in a secret world full of crime, violence, and death. Their story is about what can be born from nightmares.

Danielle “Danny” West is the daughter of Deuce West, President of the Hell’s Horsemen Motorcycle Club. A sweet and beautiful girl, she loses her way, searching for things that are always out of her reach. Erik “Ripper” Jacobs is the Sergeant of Arms in the Hell’s Horsemen. Once a man who always had a smile on his face, his life takes a turn for the worst when a tragedy befalls him, leaving him scarred and broken. During a midsummer night, Danny and Ripper’s paths cross, forever changing their lives. Hastily, their lust turns to love until another tragedy forces them apart. On a journey that is marred with ugliness and chaos, Danny and Ripper must discover if their unforeseen connection can find the beauty in their world.

This is Danny and Ripper’s story.

Everything has beauty. Even the ugly. Especially the ugly.
Because without ugly, there would be no beauty.

Type: Dark Romance
Heat: eh..3? our of 5

If you've been around a while you know I flipping LOVED book one of this series. Undeniable got an easy 5 stars from me and damn I was so excited more books were on the way. But. I'm really torn over Unbeautifully. There were parts I really liked and that so have me craving more but there were parts that really pissed me off and had me ready to just abandon the book. There was a lot of ugly in this one. Rape, murder, cheating and betrayals. This is a pretty messed up group of people and yet overall I really did still like them and the storyline. I just had some mad hate for the heroine Danny and didn't like her much at all.

Write On Review-a-Thon 7/26-7/27

The Write On review-a-thon is a monthly event created and hosted by Brianna at The Book Vixen. It’s 2 days dedicated to getting reviews done, whether you have one review to write or 30+. This edition of the review-a-thon takes place July26th and July 27th. Let’s get those reviews done!

I participated in this last month and got SO many reviews done it was ridiculous. I was able to finish up 11 reviews in the two days it happened and then carried on a bit after and wrapped up another 9 in a handful of days. Not bad!

I'm a touch behind again. I'm not starting my reviews from scratch--yeah I'm cheating a bit lol--but finishing up reviews that are drafted. I have 17 currently between ones for review and just for fun that I'd like to get done soon. Most aren't "due" for a spell but would be nice to have them pre-scheduled and ready to go!

Morning! Alright this week I picked Various States of Undress: Carolina. It's a series about a set of sisters whose daddy is the President. Anywho. This one was Carolina and her Secret Service bodyguard Jake. I just loved them. They were so sweet together with their forbidden romance happening. They're trapped at her family's mountain cabin all alone during a snow storm so things get a little more, erm, intimate than they'd expected. This little bit totally had me gigglesnorting...

Problems in Paradise (Texas Nights #3) by Kelsey Browning

Eden Durant hasn't always been Eden Durant. She's made a fresh start in Shelbyville, Texas, far from her mother's notoriety. Running the Paradise Garden Café is as much excitement as Eden wants—or it was, until she meets Beck Childress. Although he's the one man who could expose her past, she's willing to open up enough to see if he might be her future.

Chief Deputy Childress is determined to get to know the real Eden, when he isn't busy cleaning up after the sheriff and running in the election to replace him. When several men fall sick after eating in Eden's café, he investigates even as her mysterious past raises both his suspicions and his protective instincts.

As their relationship heats up, so do the pressures of Beck's campaign. When Eden's secrets are revealed, jeopardizing his dream of becoming sheriff, he'll need to choose: serve and protect the town he loves or the woman who makes it home.

Oh how could I have not read Browning sooner! I loved Problems in Paradise. It was such a fun read. Sweet, sassy and rocking some sexy too. My favorite combo of readery goodness as the town's health food fanatic and it's junk food loving Chief Deputy--who have been sniffing around each other--are finally brought together by a case of food poisoning that's plaguing Eden's restaurant. And, well, fireworks abound. It was... excellent!

Interview w/ VK Sykes-- kitchen disasters, sexy athletes and...handcuffs?!

DNF: Better Homes and Hauntings by Molly Harper

When Nina Linden is hired to landscape a private island off the New England coast, she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex. She never expects that her new client, software mogul Deacon Whitney, would see more in her than just a talented gardener. Deacon has paid top dollar to the crews he’s hired to renovate the desolate Whitney estate—he had to, because the bumps, thumps, and unexplained sightings of ghostly figures in nineteenth-century dress are driving workers away faster than he can say “Boo.”

But Nina shows no signs of being scared away, even as she experiences some unnerving apparitions herself. And as the two of them work closely together to restore the mansion’s faded glory, Deacon realizes that he’s found someone who doesn’t seem to like his fortune more than himself—while Nina may have finally found the one man she can trust with her bruised and battered heart.

But something on the island doesn’t believe in true love…and if Nina and Deacon can’t figure out how to put these angry spirits to rest, their own love doesn’t stand a ghost of a chance.

A Matter of Sin (The Ladies' Book of Pleasures #1) by Jess Michaels

The widowed Lady Isabel Avenbury has one remaining younger sister to shepherd into an advantageous marriage, and then she will be free. Free to take a lover to fill her lonely nights—the only option left for a woman on the delicate edge of a certain age.

Except when she chaperones her sister to a country house party, she is taken aback by her sudden, undeniable attraction to the host. And deliciously scandalized when she finds a copy of the notorious, much-gossiped-about Ladies Book of Pleasures in his library.

When Seth Rowland, Marquis Lyndham, notices his book is missing, his interest is piqued as to which of the potential young brides at his party has absconded with it—and he’s shocked to discover it’s Isabel. Though older than the women he’d planned to court, the powerful beauty exudes a sensuality he cannot ignore.

The book inspires them to begin a desperate, passionate affair. But their time together is running out and they must choose. Follow society’s rules, or take a chance at love.

Type: Erotic Historical

Prim & proper meets naughty! There's just something so fun about that. A Matter of Sin was a delightfully charming story of a woman searching for excitement and finding something she never thought she'd have again...love and romance. Aws.

The quick of it is that Seth's mother--who is determined to see him married and carry on the family line--has invited all of the elegible young ladies from Society to a country party in hopes one of them will snag her son's eye. But it's not those oh-so-young girls but *gasp* one of the chaperones that snags his attention...no matter how inappropriate their match may be. Add in a scandalous little book about exploring a woman's pleasures that's making rounds among the ton and oh, yes, it's going to make for an interesting party indeed!

Mine to Possess (Psy-Changling #4) by Nalini Singh

Clay Bennett is a powerful DarkRiver sentinel, but he grew up in the slums with his human mother, never knowing his changeling father. As a young boy without the bonds of Pack, he tried to stifle his animal nature. He failed...and committed the most extreme act of violence, killing a man and losing his best friend, Talin, in the bloody aftermath. Everything good in him died the day he was told that she, too, was dead.

Talin McKade barely survived a childhood drenched in bloodshed and terror. Now a new nightmare is stalking her life--the street children she works to protect are disappearing and turning up dead. Determined to keep them safe, she unlocks the darkest secret in her heart and returns to ask the help of the strongest man she knows...

Clay lost Talin once. He will not let her go again, his hunger to possess her, a clawing need born of the leopard within. As they race to save the innocent, Clay and Talin must face the violent truths of their past...or lose everything that ever mattered.

Type: Paranormal Romance-Shifters/Psy

A second chance at love, mixed mates (she's human and he's Shifter) and a bit of drama made for a pretty nice read, indeed. I'm still not entirely wowed by the Psy-Changeling world but it's growing on me and Mine to Possess was a nice addition to the series. I enjoyed it and the mix up of having a human as one of the main characters.

The quick of it is that children are disappearing and Talin--in a last ditch effort--goes to the one person she knows will help her find the kids she cares for...if only he knew she was still alive. See...years ago after he saved her life when they were children...she faked her death and ran from Clay. Yeah. Might have had a bone to pick with the heroine over that.

Cover Reveal--The Husband Games by Jamie Farrell

Morning yall! We've got a cover reveal from Jamie Farrell today! She's an awesome lady who donated to the fundraiser we held back in May :) Yall check out her book and leave her some comment love. She's giving away an ARC to someone who comments on the reveal so be sure to leave her a nice little note :)  ~Anna
After Natalie Castellano’s marriage imploded on the field of the Husband Games in Bliss, Illinois, the most married-est town on earth, the last job she expected to inherit was planning the fiftieth anniversary of her hometown’s unique Games. But with her mother’s unexpected passing, that’s exactly what Natalie’s doing. And the position demands that she play nice with CJ Blue, the man who ultimately caused Natalie’s marital demise.

Winning Bliss’s Husband Games and being crowned Husband of the Year was the brightest spot in CJ’s short marriage. Since his wife’s untimely death, he’s taken himself around the world, hiding from his grief. But now, family obligations have him trapped in Bliss, where he’s been invited to participate in the Games and humiliate himself in the name ofclosure. The whole town wants him to play. The whole town, except one. And he can’t decide what bothers him more—that Natalie doesn’t think he belongs in the Games, or that she’s right.

These two would make great enemies. But all games aside, the more they find themselves in close quarters, the harder it is to deny their mutual attraction. She’s battled Bliss’s bridal brigade, and he’s jumped out of airplanes and soared over waterfalls, but now they’re both facing the biggest risk of all: taking another chance on love.
