Lothaire (Immortals After Dark #12) by Kresley Cole

ALL FEAR THE ENEMY OF OLD

Driven by his insatiable need for revenge, Lothaire, the Lore’s most ruthless vampire, plots to seize the Horde’s crown. But bloodlust and torture have left him on the brink of madness—until he finds Elizabeth Peirce, the key to his victory. He captures the unique young mortal, intending to offer up her very soul in exchange for power, yet Elizabeth soothes his tormented mind and awakens within him emotions Lothaire believed he could no longer experience.

A DEADLY FORCE DWELLS WITHIN HER

Growing up in desperate poverty, Ellie Peirce yearned for a better life, never imagining she’d be convicted of murder—or that an evil immortal would abduct her from death row. But Lothaire is no savior, as he himself plans to sacrifice Ellie in one month’s time. And yet the vampire seems to ache for her touch, showering her with wealth and sexual pleasure. In a bid to save her soul, Ellie surrenders her body to the wicked vampire, while vowing to protect her heart.

CENTURIES OF COLD INDIFFERENCE SHATTERED
Elizabeth tempts Lothaire beyond reason, as only his fated mate could. As the month draws to a close, he must choose between a millennia-old blood vendetta and his irresistible prisoner. Will Lothaire succumb to the miseries of his past . . . or risk everything for a future with her?

Oh. Good! So, so, good! I was afraid Lothaire wouldn't live up to all the hype from the last few months. I wasn't all that thrilled with the last installment of Immortals After Dark and was dragging my feet a little with starting Lothaire. Turns out I had nothing to fear. It was....amazing! Cole is an absolute master! I mean really, who in their right mind would think Lothaire could be lovable and in fact totally make you fall for him?? Cole definitely had her work cut out for her but damn it all if by the end I wasn't just as smitten as Elizavetta!

Lothaire continues to be incredibly scary and utterly badass with a huge touch of crazy. He's finally found his Bride and blast the fates but she's stuck inside the body of a hillbilly mortal. To save his Bride and fulfill all of his desires he must find a way to get rid of her host's soul and make her immortal. For years Ellie fights the possession and dealing with the evil vampire goddess inside her who kills so many using her body and eventually lands her on death row. To Ellie's despair Lothaire arrives within minutes of her execution and imprisons her in his home dashing Ellie's hope that she was nearly free of the evil possessing her. And so their battle of wills begins.

I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamics between Ellie and Lothaire. With nothing left to lose Ellie is determined to stand her ground and not just fall into place. It did take me a little while to warm up to Ellie and her accent. It grated on me like it did Lothaire but eventually I found it pretty endearing just as he did. The girl is clever and has such a good heart. It was interesting to watch her come to terms with her situation, fight against it and analyze Lothaire. I love that she back talked Lothaire and didn't follow his orders like everyone else. His bafflement over her was something else. Really, who would dare go against his wishes? While not your typical hero in any way, shape or form Lothaire was a force you can't help but be drawn to. He's losing his mind and honestly the man has good reason to be. We get a peek into his early life and all of the betrayals he's had in his many, many years. What he's been through grips your heart and makes it ache. It's really no wonder he's evil and ruthless. I loved watching Lothaire come to terms with who his real Bride was and seeing a softer side to him. Cole did a wonderful job of changing him just enough but keeping true to his well earned reputation. Even in love he's still dark and just a bit twisted. He's definitely no sweetheart.
He lowered his hand, grumbling, "My heart doesn't fucking work right without you."
Loved this edition to Immortals After Dark. Was so good I'll definitely be reading it again some day.
