4 stars-- Midnight Alley & Feast of Fools (Morganville Vampires #3, #4) by Rachel Caine

Type: Young Adult, Paranormal Romance, Vampires
Heat: 2 out of 5
Rating: 4 out of 5

I'm really enjoying this series more than I expected to. I don't read a lot of YA but I've been sucked in by Rachel Caine and her amazing talent for cliffhangers. One of my favorite things about Caine is how the stories all blend together from book to book. There's no dramatically new theme/event but a continuation from the last book. You can really get drawn into their daily life and I love that. My only real issue isn't really a big deal but on more than one occasion I wanted to grab a character, give them a shake and yell "just stay in the dag house for once!!" Because really at some point you'd think they'd get a clue that unless it's a real necessity leaving the house only ends up in life threatening drama. Skip class already!

Midnight Alley (book 3)

I loved the addition of Myrnin to the mix of characters. A very old and sick vampire that Claire is forced to work with (because of her contract with Amelie) in hopes of saving Morganville and the vamps from disease. He is absolutely insane from the illness and it was amazing how Caine could make you want to comfort him one moment and the next to run like hell away from him because of the personality swings caused by the disease. I really hope we get more of him in the future. He always leaves you on edge waiting to see how he is going to react to things. So much drama and angst were dealt with because of Michael becoming a vampire and Claire making a deal with Amelie. Poor Shane was having such a hard time trying to deal with his complete and understandable hatred of vampires and the people he loves now being part of that world.  It was fantastic finally seeing Claire fight back against Monica and her herd. And in an absolutely stunning way. That is one character I really would not mind seeing a not so happy ending. Grrr and a little arg! Love the cliff hangers as always.

Feast of Fools (book 4)

This is my favorite so far in the series. Bishop and his crew have arrived and they are seriously scary. I really enjoyed the good guy/bad guy line being blurred from the previous books and seeing the vampires and humans of Morganville who usually battle join forces against the common enemy...Bishop. Shane continues to be my favorite. Yeah, I've got a bit of a girly crush on him even though he is a slacker and can't always control himself. I love watching him with Claire and how even though their relationship is progressing he is determined to be a good guy and wait until she's older before getting too physical. We get some hope that he and Michael will work things out in the end as well. We get more of Myrnin who I'm really enjoying. He's such an odd character and I love not knowing if he's going to be completely sane or out of his mind from moment to moment. The showdown with Bishop towards the end at the Feast was excellent and I liked Myrnin's surprise part in that. It was nice to see the characters develop and grow over this book. To see Michael's struggles with being a vampire as well as his roommates having to deal more with that as well. I can't wait to read the next book and see how things play out.

2 books down. 273 to go.

  3. I think Myrnin is my favorite character in Morganville. Although it's a battle between him and Michael. He adds depth to the series. Great review!
