2.5/3 stars-- Shooting Scars (The Artists Trilogy #2) by Karina Halle

So, yeah. Shooting Scars. A Drug Lord, a Con Artist and a Money Launderer. Oh, my!
The Gist: Javier is blackmailing his ex Ellie into leaving town with him. With revenge on his mind he's demanding her help in killing a rival drug lord. If she doesn't help? Well he'll just kill her other ex who she still has a thing for.
Yes, so. Javier, Ellie and Camden. (the drug lord, con artist and money launderer, respectively) They're all absolute shit people. They really are. Not too many redeeming qualities with these three. Passion, maybe. But, yeah, the world would not be hurting if they were offed. I didn't hate them, though. They're a big batch of fucked up mess but not entirely without their charm somehow. Crazy, irrational, nutty charm, maybe, but still. I didn't hate them.

The story was action packed but more or less pointless overall. It was a multi day (weekish?) chase through Mexico as Camden tries to save Ellie from Javier's evil clutches. While all three do fucked up things in the process.

I think my frustration is that this really didn't need to be it's own book. It could have been combined with others in one volume. It was basically one really long scene/episode that started randomly and ended randomly with nothing really being solved. Yes, there's a cliffhanger and you have to finish their hunt in book 3. *eye roll*

I didn't *hate* Shooting Scars. It was an "easy" read, at least, and did move along swiftly. It's action packed and gritty. It just landed in the pointless filler category.

When Ellie Watt offered herself to her thuggish former lover Javier to save Camden's life, she never imagined the twisted game Javier had planned for her. Trapped by him and his entourage of killers, Ellie is forced to commit a dangerous, heinous crime-or Javier will kill Camden. Now ex-con artist Ellie must find a way to stay ahead of the game . . . before it destroys her and the only man she ever loved.

Camden McQueen can't forget Ellie Watt. Seeking revenge and pursued by the authorities for a crime he didn't commit, the talented tattoo artist does things he never thought himself capable of to save Ellie. As Camden straddles the line between love and retribution, he vows to do everything in his power to get her back. But if Camden unleashes his dark side, will Ellie still love him?
