The Gist: Callie and Kayden have not had easy childhoods but they're finally escaping the pain of home life for college. And it's overwhelming. Scary and exciting and a chance to be different people. To take back some of what was stolen from them. Even if it's with the unlikeliest of group friends.
I liked both Callie and Kayden. They're both strong individuals who have been through hell. Beaten down and broken but have managed to survive and turn into pretty great people. They're both easy to like and cheer for and want to hold tight.
Their romance is slow going since both have some major issues they're dealing with. They're sweet, though. Callie so hesitant but brave. Kayden understanding and gentle. Things do eventually heat up but it takes them a while and there are some hard stumbling blocks they have to deal with.
They have great friends, too. Four of them against everything. Two best buddies who play football, Callie and her former goth loner ways and her gay best friend. They're a little quirky and endearing as they settle into school and start figuring out life.
Overall, The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden was enjoyable. Good characters, personal growth, some sweet moments and funny ones and some that just made me shake my head. I did like the misfit group of friends and enjoyed the start of their friendships. They're all rocking some pretty painful pasts but doing their best. Hard not to appreciate that.
**Note-- Going in I knew this wasn't a complete story but it still irks a bit. I'll probably continue on eventually if I can find copies at the library or used bookstore but I wasn't as blown away by many so am in no rush. Especially after the non-ending. I'll just assume they wind up together.
For Kayden, suffering in silence was the only way to survive. If he was lucky, he could keep his head down, do as he was told, and make it through the day. But one night it seemed like his luck -- and his life -- might finally end... until an angel named Callie appeared just in time to rescue him.
Callie has never believed in luck. Not since her twelfth birthday when everything was taken from her. After the worst was over, she locked up her feelings and vowed never to tell anyone what happened. Now, six years later, she continues to struggle with the painful secret that threatens to consume her.
When fate lands Kayden and Callie at the same college, Kayden is determined to get to know the beautiful girl who changed his destiny. Quiet and reserved, Callie still fears letting anyone else into her world. But Kayden is certain that Callie has come back into his life for a reason. And the more he tries to be a part of her life, the more he realizes that, this time, it's Callie who needs to be saved...
