Hey Everybody! Herding Cats & Burning Soup has graciously allowed me to take over Quote-tastic Monday! (I promise her arm will be out of the sling soon. I tried not to twist too hard, but I guess I don’t know my own strength. ) Let me introduce myself. My name is P.A. DePaul and the quote I’ve chosen today comes from my Romantic Suspense release, Exchange of Fire, SBG #1.

In Exchange of Fire we meet a clandestine Black Ops team working for SweetBriar Group (AKA SBG), a corporation the rest of the world believes is an environmental company. Our heroine, Wraith (AKA Sandra Walsh), the sniper for the squad, had left SBG and gone on the run. She began working for our hero, Casper Grady (a former Marine who opened a family fun center).  Talon (another operative of Delta Squad) has been in love with Wraith for years but never told her. When the team finally reunites, Talon realizes he has to step aside to allow another rooster in the hen house in order to make her happy. Yikes. For a man whose emotional development never got the check mark beside “Plays well with others,” that blow had to set him back.
“I’d give her anything she wanted if it was within my power,” Talon continued. “But she’s chosen you, asshole, and you threw her away.”

Breathe, Grady. You just vowed not to beat him in front of the children. “That sounds an awful lot like a man in love,” he replied in a low, hard voice. “I’m going to ask you straight up: Are you in love with her? Because everything I hear and see shows me you are.”

“Doesn’t matter what I feel; what matters is what I do about it.” Talon faced the small crowd in the meadow and fiddled with a thin leather band around his neck. The necklace popped from beneath his T-shirt, and the silver spiraling dragon pendant twirled with the movement. “I flipped a coin, and talking to you won over burying a knife in your heart for hurting her.”

Da-yum! Talon is not a man to mess with. He means exactly what he says and I bet he really did flip that coin. Prick…yet, dramatic sigh. I love this whole scene. So much tension. So many things said without words…and when words do start flying, look out! Poor Grady having to meet Delta Squad like he did, then hit the ground running as he tried to keep up with the Black Ops team who’ve worked together for five years. These operators are more than just a squad, they’re a family and no one messes with family.

Thank you Herding Cats & Burning Soup for letting me share one of my favorite interactions in EXCHANGE OF FIRE, SBG #1. If I thought I could’ve gotten away with it, I’d have continued that excerpt going. :) Also, thank you to the readers who spent time with me today. I <3 you. I’m open to answering questions if anyone has ‘em! As long as you don’t mind the possibility of me using literary license, then fire away! (Hey, I’ve got to make myself sound good, right?)
