The quick of it is that Brett needed a break from big city medicine and has come back to his small home town to work at a local hospital. It's just a stopping point for him before moving on again. He doesn't need to form connections but the sweet local florist? Being forced to work on a big fundraising event with her? Yeah, she may end up being too dang tempting to resist.
I really liked these two. Ivy is a florist and despite a hard childhood made a place for herself in the town. I loved her passion making life little brighter with her creations and how she used them to care for others. And Brett. He's all about his job and fixing people who come through his ER. His childhood wasn't all roses either and he still struggles with relationships and getting close to others. I hurt for him and how removed he was from everyone who loved him or wanted to.
They were good together. They had some shared history of growing up together and months earlier a heated make out session but other than that just light friendship up until now. I liked their little bit of shared history and just them together. Heat-wise, while they have great chemistry, it's fairly PG. Some kissing and hot beginnings but then fading to black.
Now their issues. For Brett--he's dealing with the pressures of being an emergency doctor and struggling to find his confidence and stride again after losing a patient. And with trying to fix relationships with his family after nearly a decade away. And Ivy? She's got diabetes. In one of the previous books it was a big issue because she wasn't treating herself properly and put her life at risk. So she's dealing with the fall out of that and being treated differently by those that know (family) and hiding it from others. Their issues are totally different but I liked that they were both dealing with something and trying to find balance in their lives. They kept their issues pretty close to the chest with everyone in their lives...except each other. For some reason they could get the other to talk. And I liked that. That they found someone they could confide their fears and worries in.
All in all, Miles continues to deliver passion, emotion, and romance that'll touch the heart. It took these two a while to figure things out but I enjoyed their journey and seeing each of them overcome the past and what was holding them back in life. We should all be so lucky.
Florist Ivy Birch fantasizes about the day a man will surprise her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Especially if that man happens to be Brett Hastings. One stolen kiss at her best friend's wedding and Ivy can't get the sexy ER doctor out of her head.
In the small town of Briar Creek, you can't avoid anyone for very long. Not that Brett has been trying to avoid Ivy. He just can't afford to let anything distract him from his work-not again. So when a hospital fundraiser throws them together, love is the last thing on his mind. But with her quick wit and sweet laugh, soon the one woman he's tried to keep at arm's length is capturing his heart...
