Guest Post w/ Elisabeth Staab--How a Tortured Boxer Made My Knees Weak

Ten Times a Tortured Boxer Made My Knees Weak

Acts of Creation was one of the most emotional books I’ve written, but it’s also one of my most treasured. In the process of putting this story into words, I fell completely and madly in love with my hero, Dante, a boxer who’d been sexually abused by his former coach. This big, strong athlete who was all alpha and swagger on the outside, was numb inside and starving for love. When he finally found it, with a girl in town who could truly understand his troubles, the someone he grew into made my heart melt over and over.

Listed below are a few key moments when his words gave me the flutters:
  • Here I thought I wasn’t good at anything but fighting. I just made a girl smile.
  • I like this girl. I feel with this girl.
  • Jesus and Mary, she’s fucking trying to thumb wrestle. I let her trap my thumb under hers a few times. No way do I even try to win.
  • “The first thing I wanted when I woke up last night was to bury myself inside you and forget the rest of the world.”
  • Her stare makes my world tilt. Makes me feel like she’s a fire and I’m standing too close.
  • Her voice is a whisper of silk and velvet across my skin … raising goosebumps over every exposed inch.
  • This girl’s got a better heart than anybody. If my mother were here, she’d probably tell me to marry her.
  • Even in the chilly dark on Main Street, remembering the moment she stood on her toes and pushed her lips against mine makes my body warm.
  • I want to tell her everything. I want to drop every bomb, throw out every ugly thing I’ve ever seen and done until there’s nothing around us but rubble. I have to know if she’ll still smile at me like I’m worth something once the dust settles.
  • Michelle, she’s priceless. I can’t afford to hurt her.

He’s living a lie.

Dante Ramos: Champion. Ladies’ man. Party animal. Women want him, and men either want to be him or put his lights out for sleeping with their girlfriends. It’s all an act. Inside, he’s so full of self-loathing he’s on a fast-track to self-destruction.

She’s living in the shadows.

Meeting Michelle at a support group for assault survivors shows Dante a new world of possibilities. Finally, someone in his life might understand him, and she creates in him a fierce need to protect. Trouble is, Dante lives his life in the spotlight, and the only thing Michelle wants is a place to hide.
