5 stars [quotetastic] The Vixen and the Vet (A Modern Fairytale #1) by Katy Regnery

Whew. The Vixen and the Vet was just...everything. What a read!
The Gist: Savannah needs a career save. All she has to do is find a human interest piece that'll impress a newspaper editor. And that comes in the form of her broody neighbor... a severely disfigured war veteran who's become the town recluse. She gets a bit more than she bargained for when she meets Asher. That's for sure.
Seriously, yall. These two. They just floored me. Savannah and Asher have been so damaged by life. Savannah betrayed and her career ruined, Asher with severe injuries that left him disfigured. They're hiding out in their home town, lonely, lost. In need of something to help them start recovering and living again. He's growly, unpolished, a true hero who's lost his mission. She's full of heart and determination and even though she was a reporter I still loved her. lol

Their romance. Gah! Seriously. These two made me melt. It's slow burning as she starts interviewing him and over the weeks they break down each others barriers. I absolutely adored them as a couple. Couldn't help smiling and crying over them. Hoping they'd find their way and that they'd get past simple friendship and start heating things up (and they sure did!).

The military aspect was hard. A hero coming home with a ruined body and little support. It hurt seeing what Asher went through and continued to go through. How strangers saw him. How he saw himself. Knowing that it does happen in real life every day. It definitely made for an emotional element as Savannah stormed into his life and things started to change for him after years of self imposed isolation.

All in all, The Vixen and the Vet blew me away. It made me laugh, cry, ripped my heart out and filled me with hope and happiness. It's one read I won't soon forget.

Just a quick quote today because it made me smile and go aw a little. It's just so sweet.
“Asher Lee,” said Savannah breathlessly, standing up at the table, her knees wobbly from the force of her feelings. “What did you just do for me?”

“Savannah Carmichael,” he said, his face softening with the most tender, loving smile she’d ever seen. “I love you. Don’t you know I’d do anything for you?”

In this modern-retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Savannah Carmichael, betrayed by an unreliable source, returns to her hometown of Danvers, Virginia with her once-promising journalism career in ruins. Given the opportunity to get back in the game by writing a patriotic human interest piece, Savannah turns her attention to the town hermit, Asher Lee, a wounded veteran who returned to Danvers eight years ago, and hasn’t been seen since.

After an IED explosion in Afghanistan took Asher’s hand and disfigured half of his face, he's lived a quiet life on the outskirts of Danvers where the locals respect his privacy…that is, until Savannah Carmichael comes calling in a borrowed sundress with a plate of homemade brownies. When Asher agrees to be interviewed by Savannah, he starts feeling things for the beautiful reporter that he hasn’t felt in years.

Misfits in small-town Danvers, Savannah and Asher create a bond right away, touching each other’s hearts in ways neither thought possible. When a terrible mistake threatens to drive them apart, they’ll have to decide if the love they found in one another’s arms is strong enough to fight for their hard-won happily ever after.
