Q: Have you ever bought a book BECAUSE of a bad review?

A: Hm. I honestly don't think so....off to Goodreads to flip through my books....nope doesn't look like it. I did just buy Christine Feehan's Deadly Games for a kinda similar reason. Someone in a group was complaining how Maya Banks new book was way too similar to Feehan's Deadly Games. I LOVED Banks book so decided to pick up Feehan's to see how similar I thought they were. So, kinda.

I have decided to read a book I already own after seeing a bad review of two though. Books I wanted to read eventually just hadn't gotten around to yet. One of those was Elizabeth Amber's Raine. There were some reviews just trashing the book and how they couldn't finish it it was so gross. Well. That made me have to pick it up right away and see what all the fuss was about. It's definitely not for the close minded. Amber's books are historical erotica and her heroes/heroines far from your average character. One of the things that got people so in a snit over Raine was that the heroine, Jordan, is a hermaphrodite. Some very different scenes and issues resulted. I loved the book and it's my favorite of the series because Amber took a risk and stepped outside of a lot of people's comfort zones. The characters were really well done and the hero, Raine, found a spot in my top heroes list because of how he treated his heroine.

  1. I had to laugh because Raine was also one I'd picked up because of all the bad reviews! I forgot to list that on my post (I'm going back and adding it though!)

  7. I rarely read reviews at all & I can't remember ever reading a book because of a bad review. However if there is any kind of controversy about a book I will just about kill myself to get that book & read it. For example, there was a historical romance a couple of years ago that came out & some people were saying the hero raped the heroine. Others were saying it was a forced seduction, not rape. Well, I was already familiar with this author's work & liked it a lot so I pretty much knew there was no rape in the book but I had to know what people were talking about. In my opinion, it wasn't a rape or anything close to rape. Also I read a review of a book that was really intriguing. It was a dark story. Not for the faint of heart or easily offended. the reviewer said there was times when she thought she couldn't keep reading. There was one statement in the review, something like "Did the author make me like the hero (who was so unlikable)?" Her answer was yes. It's a book way out of my comfort zone & I ended up winning a copy when I commented about the review. I've not read the book yet because there is a Part 2 & it's not coming out til September. When it comes out I will read the first book & hopefully the 2nd if I can handle it. lol

    1. The controversies always interest me too. Which books/authors are these?

  8. The first one is TAKEN BY THE PRINCE by Christina Dodd. The 2nd one I mentioned is CAPTIVE IN THE DARK by C.J. Roberts.

    1. Hm. Haven't read either of those authors. I just got my first Dodd book this last week and emailed a little with her. She seems like a very nice lady.

  10. I often read books because of negative ratings.. I don't know if I have ever bought one, however. Tastes differ, and more often that not I find myself disagreeing with positive reviews anyway. Why wouldn't that be the case with negative ratings as well? *g*

  12. Oh & I meant to say C.J. Roberts is a new author for me. And I think she just has that one book out so far. Here is the review that intrigued me. http://samsawesomness.blogspot.com/2011/12/caleb-is-man-with-singular-interest-in.html

And here is an interview with the author. http://samsawesomness.blogspot.com/2012/02/meet-cj-roberts-author-interview-and.html
