My Soul To Keep (Soul Screamers #3) by Rachel Vincent

Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.Until something does. Demon breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked. And so is someone else…

Vincent, you're killing me here! My Soul to Keep was an excellent addition to the Soul Screamers series but man alive did it pull me in all kinds of directions I really, really, didn't want to go. Talk about ripping my heart out and stomping on it! The story moves along quickly and in Vincent's usual style. Emotional turmoil, humor, characters that aren't perfect but you still love, the lovely world of high school and all the drama that comes with being a teen, some really creepy and scary moments for our main characters.

Kaylee is finally free after weeks of being grounded. Things should be great but there's trouble at school. Somehow her classmates are getting their hands on Demon's Breath. Something that shouldn't be possible and is putting lives at risk. Not only that but there's a new tension with Nash. He's pushing Kaylee to do more than she's ready for, having weird behavior swings, using his Influence on her when he shouldn't. Now, I love Nash. He's been my favorite character since book one but, man, when the boy screws up he doesn't hold back. I couldn't believe the developments with Nash (this is where that whole stomping on my heart thing came into play). I was right there with Kaylee sharing her disappointment and hurt. I haven't given up on Nash and really hope he'll find a way to redeem himself and make things right with Kaylee. Just like with her Shifters series I found myself in a bit of a frantic state going NOOOOOO, Rachel, you've got to be kidding me! She has an unbelievable talent for giving her characters flaws and letting them screw up in spectacular ways.

One character that's starting to win me over is Tod. I'm liking him a lot more even with his random peeping tom moments. I loved that he felt protective over Kaylee and stood up to his brother. That he was just as outraged and angry on Kaylee's behalf. He wasn't completely free of guilt but at least he had honorable intentions when he had his little "are you freaking kidding me" moment.  His humor is fantastic and I like that his way of thinking and how he goes about things is just a little off.
“So what did you do?" I repeated.
"I hit Sophie on the back of the head with a universal remote. This thing was huge. It's like a cell phone from the '90s."
"You were supposed to get rid of Avari without hurting the host!"
"Yeah, I didn't get that memo. Maybe next time you should be a little more specific when you boss me around while I'm saving your ass. Though, frankly, this whiny little shrew is lucky she only has one bump, 'cause she's had this coming for a while." - Kaylee and Tod
Even though many parts of My Soul to Keep really hurt my heart, being a Nash girl and all, it was still a great read. There are so many ways things can go for each of the characters and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on book four and seeing what they all do next.

How do you feel when one of your favorite characters does something majorly outside of their normal behavior? Does it crush you a little like it does me?

  1. Hi there :) just popping in...

I haven't started reading this series yet but I have looked at it a few times. After what you've just said I'm not sure if it's the books for me. I also hate when characters do something that makes me go... huh???
