Just the girls. (A to Z)

The girls are actually Julie and Jaime. I'm the odd one out with this being an A but they still love me. So, I'm gonna tell you a little about these two insane girls and how we ended up "the Burnt Toast Mafia".

Jaime's been around for going on 10 years. We met in college through Habitat for Humanity and the girl stuck :) Then a  couple years ago Julie and I met through a mutual friend because of animal rescue. Around a year and a half ago I had the fabulous idea of introducing Julie and Jaime even though I usually keep friends from different parts of my life separate. It really worked out well though. Yay!

We decided to get together and do a little cooking that first time. Just hang out, visit a bit. Invited a whole bunch of ladies but just the 3 of us ended up coming. And so it began. We had so much fun we decided to make it a monthly thing with just us. We try out all kinds of new recipes and usually have a theme. You know, all tiny foods one month (enter those damn petit fours from hell from the cupcake post). Or maybe round foods another. So appetizer, main course and a dessert that all have to be round. Usually it's pretty good. But sometimes things like seafood lasagna happen. And, well, seafood is not a good look for lasagna. It was like an uber booger.

The funniest one was Phallic February. Yes, you read that right. Any and everything penis shaped. There were even penis straws. And yes, we're all in our 20s and 30s but damn if this didn't send us into some giggles. Some...interesting...research finding recipes for this one. My google search was damn hysterical. A nice jiggly purple jello penis and a chocolate penis cake complete with oreo cookie "hair" for dessert. Zucchini boats with Arancini for the boys. Those are stuffed rice balls. Yum! Who doesn't love friends you can just be an absolute goof around and do silly things like spending an entire afternoon cooking penis shaped food?

I really don't know how we ended up the Burnt Toast Mafia. Someone's ridiculous comment I'm sure and it just happened. Maybe because our cooking usually has an OMG! moment. We forget the dessert in the oven and it gets slightly singed. Or, well, forget an ingredient or two. It's silly. It's goofy. But it fits us. And Lord help me even have nicknames.

It's become a nice little support group. We don't always end up cooking. Sometimes we just get together and go out for drinks and dinner. Sometimes we'll check out a local band. Or end up in the ER on a Saturday night when someone breaks her foot. Or heading out for a day of shopping at the outlet malls (and yeah, the girls ended up bringing fedoras for that one since we're the mafia and they thought it was a hoot. They're seriously goofy). The girls both come over and help out at the rescue when I need and extra hand too. So we vent about life, gossip about everything under the sun and just have a good time with each other. You really couldn't ask for two better people to spend your time with :)
