Hi, I’m Tamara Hughes, author of Once Upon a Masquerade and Tempting the Pirate, and today I’m hijacking Cat Thursday with my own experiences with Oscar, my wily feline.

I’ve never been much of a dog person. I mean I like dogs. They’re cute and sweet and loving. And really needy. I grew up in the country, and our dogs stayed outside. I’d come home from school and want to veg in front of the TV, but the moment I got home, our dog would bark and cry for me to play. The guilt always got to me, which turned what should have been a fun time goofing around with our dog into a chore. I always felt selfish for wanting some alone time.

My husband and I have two kids who desperately wanted a pet. We had crayfish and a hamster, but that wasn’t enough. They wanted a big, cuddly pet, so we decided on a cat. I didn’t know much about them. Never had one. Never thought I’d want one. The kids picked out a candidate from the humane society’s website. He was a black, seven week old kitten with a white streak on his nose, down his tummy, and on his paws. (A tuxedo cat)

The woman at the humane society wanted an adult to be the first to hold him, so she gave him to me. No bigger than my palm, he began purring the moment she placed him in my hands. Big purrs. Loud ones. So sweet. We took him to a room where we could get to know him. The whole time he stuck around me, hiding behind my back, clawing at my shoelaces.

At home, he was an active little bugger. He attacked a ball on a wire like a little maniac, and he cleaned the dust out of every nook and cranny of the house. We called him Oscar, and he’s one of the family now. He treats each of us differently. My husband lets him play in the yard and gives him back scratches. My youngest is his playmate, and my oldest is his nighttime buddy. For me, he likes to cuddle and sleep on my legs. I guess I’m his mom cat.

I didn’t know if I’d like a cat, but I really do. His antics make me laugh, and his cuddling is so sweet. Although he lets me know if I’m not giving him enough attention, for the most part he accepts me for who I am. I need my alone time without the guilt, and apparently so does he.

Now that I’ve thoroughly spilled, tell me what you like best about your pet.
Charity Goswick thinks she is escaping an arranged marriage to a brute when she slips onto a ship unnoticed. Little does she realize that this is no honorable vessel of the King's Navy - it is a pirate ship. It's just a matter of time before she is discovered by a handsome rake of a pirate, who locks her in his cabin. And while she should be scared, her captor sparks the most unladylike feelings within her...

James Lamont is on the ship for one reason, and one reason only: to track down his brother. However, his spirited little stowaway certainly affords plenty of distraction with her many (failed) attempts to escape. And each time, the unspoken - and unbidden - passion between them grows stronger. But as violence and danger mount on the high seas, Charity will have to put all of her trust in the most untrustworthy of men... the arrogant pirate who just might steal her heart.
