4 stars-- On Broken Wings (Wild Aces #3) by Chanel Cleeton

*sniffles*

Seriously, yall. On Broken Wings grabbed my heart, twisted me about, and put me back together again. And I managed to cry way less than I'd expected. I totally made it to page 3 before bursting out in tears and all the way to page 28 before the consumption of 2 super slutty brownies and another two crying jags hit. lol

I just. Okay. Lets see if I can do this review. Whew.

On Broken Wings. The basic set up is that Easy has been in love with his best friend's wife since he first met her. He'd never act on that in a million years. Never. He'll love her from afar. But then the unthinkable happens. His best friend is killed on a training mission leaving both Easy and Dani to figure out their new lives without him.
"Are you okay?" I asked.

She took a deep breath, her lips trembling, and nodded.

"Not convincing."

"I know," she whispered. "Sorry."
Yall. These two. They absolutely broke my heart. And made me smile. And swoon. And plead for their happily ever after. They both struggled so much with guilt, loss, their new reality and an attraction that left them unsettled and uncertain. I absolutely loved them down to their toes. They're good people that care deeply and I loved seeing them both healing.

Their romance wasn't easy. It wasn't a quick path to their happily ever after. There were bumps and set backs and struggles. But they were perfect for each other and just felt right. I loved how much they meant to each other simply as friends and seeing that grow. And, whew, once things heat up...damn! Yes, please! lol

I also really like that Cleeton doesn't shy away from the hard things. Military life, loss, grief, the struggle of moving on and relationships and expectations changing. It definitely makes for some heavy moments but she masterfully includes lighthearted and sexy bits that balance things out and truly make or a lovely read.
I didn't even bother trying to hide my reaction, because there hardly seemed to be a point. I doubted I was the first, tenth, or even hundredth woman to lose her shit in the face of Easy's body.

I swallowed again, not meeting his gaze, lost somewhere in pec-land. And then I went lower.

Defined, tan abs gave way to indents on either side of his hips. He was tan and smooth, his skin...

Jesus.

No wonder he had so much success with women. If this was what came of hitting the gym and eating healthy, maybe I needed to rethink my life choices.

Say something.

The words tumbled out. "So that working-out thing is working for you, huh?"

I did not just say that.

A moment passed and then he let out a strangled laugh. "Something like that."
Chanel Cleeton has cemented her place on my 'Top Authors' list. Goodness but this woman knows how to write a stunning romance that'll leave you limp and satisfied. My only complaint? That the series is apparently over at 3 books. Yall. I would do some real naughty things for another book or 10. lol

** I think this could be read as a stand alone but reading from the start of the series will give it the most impact since book one was what set the path for these two in motion.

A year after losing her husband, Joker, the squadron commander of the Wild Aces, Dani Peterson gets an offer from his best friend, Alex “Easy” Rogers, to help fix up her house. Dani accepts, and their friendship grows—along with an undeniable attraction.

Racked by guilt for loving his best friend’s widow, Easy’s caught between what he wants and can’t have. Until one night everything changes, and the woman who’s always held his heart ends up in his arms. Yet as Easy leaves for his next deployment, he and Dani are torn between their feelings and their loyalty to Joker’s memory.

But when Dani discovers something that sends them both into a spin, the conflicted lovers must overcome the past to navigate a future together…
